environments, collections & services

I. THE LIBRARY ENVIRONMENT

It is located at the right wing of the 2nd floor of the SMAO building on the campus and accessible to students and faculty. The different sections are:

1. THE READING SECTION – The Circulation Desk and the Reserve Section of textbooks and materials are its main features. The card catalogue occupies a strategic place in the Reading Section to facilitate the circulation of materials as well as to train the students as independent users of library resources. The library space is arranged, lighted and ventilated for effective functioning. The seating arrangement in the Reading Section can easily accommodate the number of readers at all hours when the library is in service.

2. PERIODICAL SECTION – The core collection of Periodicals on current and relevant issues, together with the newspapers, are displayed for open-shelf system on the display counter and the racks of the Reading Section.

Bound and past issues of journals, magazines, and pamphlets – are in the Periodical Section. Students are free to browse; the open-shelf system is a practical way to help the uninitiated “researcher”.

3. INSTRUCTIONAL MEDIA SERVICES (IMS) – An area with 15 units of computers; internet connected to be used for research, encoding and purely academic purposes.

4. INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS ROOM – This room can be utilized for small group discussion. The library materials in this room can be borrowed for classroom use during class hours.

5. WORK ROOM – for Student Assistants book repair of minor types like loose binding, torn or written pages etc. is handled by trained students.

II. THE COLLECTIONS

A. BOOKS

Our collections are appropriate and adequate for our readers’ instructional and recreational needs, and for general reference and research.

The basic collections over the years have been checked after consultations of standard bibliographies, book reviews and publishers’ notices.

Linkages with international publishers through friends and alumni abroad provide opportunities to keep abreast with current publications. Efforts are made to be updated with latest trends in teaching.

Book acquisition is done throughout the year, with the help of the dean, the Faculty, and the Library Advisory Committee. At times, the instructor of the course is asked to review or evaluate an “examination” copy of a new edition before it is adopted as basic text.

B. PERIODICALS

A Vertical File collection of clippings on controversial and current issues is in the Reading Section to supplement the book collections of teacher’s references. These clippings are borrowed at the Circulation Desk.

Current issues of magazines and journals are displayed on the magazine racks. Students and teachers are free to browse and read them.

C. NON-PRINT AND AUDIOVISUAL MATERIALS

These are the materials which are not dependent on the printed words to transmit meaning. They may take the form of motion picture on films or magnetic storage devices, (video tapes); audio information on magnetic tapes or pressed into vinyl discs, computer generated data; and many other formats.
